Volitile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
Serving Industrial Clients In Processes, Facilities and Reduction of Emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds

VOC Elimination and Reduction is a primary concern to many companies that handle these compounds in their manufacturing processes. UTI has unique expertise and years of experience in the technologies used to reduce and/or eliminate VOC emissions.

The real key to success in the elimination of VOCs is understanding the process and determining the waste stream VOC loadings. Incorrect evaluations can lead to incorrect equipment selection, adverse impact on the cost of energy for eliminating VOCs and finally the impact on the manufacturing business.

List of Recent Projects

1 - Memory Tape Manufacturer PHA - 2004:
UTI has recently completed a Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) for an RTO for a memory tape manufacturer, along with other parts of the web coating and drying process. UTI's services were requested by the client after a number of fires had occurred in the system designed by others. Our Engineers identified a number of defective design aspects that we conclude contributed to unsafe conditions and to the fires. We worked with this client to resolve these issues.

2 - Expert Witness for RTO Design and Construction Failure Lawsuit - 2003-2004:
This past year UTI personnel provided expert witness testimony, on behalf of a major paper company, on the cause of an RTO failure at one of their locations. As a result, the case was settled out of court.

3 - PSM & PHAs for a Large Oven Coater Process - 2004:
We set up corporate standards for Process Safety Management (PSM) and PHAs for a number of Large Coater Clients. Their processes ranged from latex to solvent based coating and thermal oxidation.

4 - OUS Project / Brazil-Country, RTO Design and Start-Up - 2004:
UTI is assisting a Web Coating and Converting Company in the Country of Brazil to resolve a number of operational and design issues on their thermal oxidizer.

5 - RTO Engineering Design, System Configuration and Engineering Estimates – for Numerous Clients in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004: UTI completed a number of RTO designs for installations of a new Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer. UTI completed design calculations, LFL determinations and evaluation of the effect on the existing waste heat recovery boiler. We have also provided preliminary engineering; such as, cost estimate for the installation, overall justification and development of procurement specifications.

6 - Conceptual Designs for RTO Systems - Develop AFE Packages for 2-qty Manufacturing Companies - 1998 -2004:
UTI recently put together a number of cost evaluations for a thermal oxidizer installation at a roofing material manufacturer and a by products manufactures here in the metro area.

7 - Solvent Recovery System Review - 2003:
UTI evaluated the specification of solvent recovery coils, system flow and material design for a magnetic tape manufacturer in California .

8 - Stack and Source System Redesign for a Number of Coater/Makers - 1998 - 2004:
UTI completed a number of VOC waste exhaust duct and damper installation project in the past 5-years. Source and stack dampers were added to a number of systems, and the ducts were resized based on changes to airflow rates and LFL levels employed in the process today.

9 - Elimination of LFL Pockets in Coaters/Makers - 2000 - 2004:
UTI is working on and has completed numerous redesign projects for coater exhaust for the elimination of high LFL pockets. UTI is presently working on some 5-coater projects today ranging from upgrading existing systems, to designing new coater exhaust systems there, and the selection and implementation of VOC equipment.

10 - Thermal Oxidizers Redesign and Reconfiguration - 2003:
UTI has completed a project to upgrade the solvent oven and thermal oxidizer ducts, dampers, and controls for a fortune 100 client

11- RTO Startup Debugging and Commissioning – 2004:
UTI was involved in the startup, debugging and commissioning of RTO equipment in Shanghai China .

12 - UTI Publication On Up Front Engineering Relative to RTOs - 2002:
UTI Vice President David Herron, P.E. published an article on RTO and up front engineering analysis for the purpose of saving energy. Please see attached PDF Article.
